Projects and Case Studies
I get bored easilly....
I am one of those people who needs to be doing something all the time.  Always have been. I probably always will be.  Here are a few bits of art, artistically related case studies and so on that are associated with me.

Personal Project:
New Digital Artwork: Retouching
Retouching of photos - is pretty common. But the trick is to not make the retouching too obvious.  They say that 98% of all photos you see out there now have been photoshopped these were done as part of a tutorial on the subject.

In the image below, we've fixed the skin, removed blemishes and softened it - did a bit of work on the eyes and lips and got the tones in the hair to stand out.  It's not an "extreme" photoshop, it's just very subtle and that's the point.  Most people don't want a touch up that makes them look like a super model they want a touch up that makes them look good. The girl below is already beautiful - in fact to bring out the shine in her eyes required nothing more than a touch up of levels.  As I tried to point out in the tutorial - the best retouchings are touchups - not rebuilds.

If we wanted to take this further we'd clear up her eyebrows, maybe do a bit of work on the ear, add  dash of gloss to the lips.

Personal Project:
New Digital Artwork: Blue Eyed Child
The original photo to this - is an amazing portrait by Danielle Mae over on Flickr, who has an amazing eye.  I saw a portrait she took- and it reminded me of a water color of a child that used to hang in the Rock Springs Fine Arts Center, so this is in part my attempts to recreate that.  A shout-out definitely goes to Danielle - who's work with kids is really amazing - and her flickr pages over at http://www.flickr.com/photos/daniellemae07/

Personal Project:
New Web Site
Well.. much as I like being able to update this thing via the web with no tools and with a lot of ease....
I am a professional and this looks... well ... like a template web site because that's what it is.
Sooooo... here's the preview of the new website I'm working on.

Personal Project: SpaceHawk update...
The Adventure is almost ready...
Now that summer's here - Haakon's working on his first treatment. As part of that I'm doing some of the graphics for it.

Personal Project: Kings Row Taxi Service
Comic Books Are Where It's At....
As some may know from time to time I divest myself of one small mindless vice, City of Heroes.  It's an online massive multi-player game where you get to be a Superhero, and if that's not cool I don't know what is.

Lets face it there's nothing cooler than being a hero.  I don't get to play often but when I do - I play with a team of the best, a group of nut jobs who are affectionately known as the "Kings Row Taxi Service".  I was once a leader of their cadre - and helped build them into one of the largest and longest running superhero groups on the Infinity server.

We had a website, coffee mugs, posters, you name it - we'd made the Kings Row Taxi Service the center of fun.  (Yes, you can officially declare me a geek loser now.)

I haven't logged on in a long time due to work, and I haven't kept up the website there like I should.  Like this site, it's designed to let me just update it when I need and the rest of the time I kinda let it slide so I can do things like, pay bills by working.

So - I logged on and discovered that in my absence... much had befallen the once great Taxis.

To help out - I devised a case study, and began working on a series of small projects which will help the guys at KRTS to expand on, allowing them to self maintain these projects and have fun and grow with them. .

A video trailer to help new members see what kinds of fun they're going to experience...

And I began assembling an Online comic book in part to provide exsiting users a perk and new users something to look forward to...

The Comic is comprised of the various screenshots the guys have collected, which, with a bit of photoshoping ... become comic book panel art work that I can bring into Planetwide Media's Comic Book Creator

Now some people might say, "This sounds like a ton of fun but ... um...uh... How does this really relate to a Project? Or anything I can learn from?".  Glad you asked, actually it's lesson number one of all good Program or Project Management: No matter what you do - do it well

For the guys at KRTS, I wanted to give them a full blown branding, marketing and a method of reaching their users.  For that... you need attack it just like any other project.  Define the market, the needs, the goal, the mission, and resources - just like any other project.

Second step is of course to assemble those into project areas which we could tie to the mission and the goals.  Finally, it's to execute on those goals.

So - my project this for the month of April ... was to make the Kings Row Taxi Service, the best known Superhero Group Website of their kind.  :-)  Mix work with pleasure whenever you can... it does wonders for both activities.

Digital Art:
  Yup... I'm into that too...

Comic Books and Graphic Novels

One of my passions is doing storyboards and mock ups - occasionally, as is the case with the KRTS project I actually went a step or two farther and created an actual comic book using screen shots from members and original art... here's a few pages....

Spacehawk:

An Alien Boy and His Dog...

My Son's been working on a comic book - which the story is really pretty cool sounding (even if I am biased).  It's a coming of age storyline involving what would happen if someone - really had superpowers, was a complete and total goody-two-shoes comic book hero... in our rather twisted and negative world.

We decided on a few characters... here's "Sparrowhawk" - Spacehawks female sidekick from our world... read the book it's a bit difficult to explain and I'd rather not give away too much.  We're still working on the look - but here's a few shots we're working on.

The Mildthing Chronicles:
Momma Told Me Not to Come...

Unlike the KRTS Project the Mildthing books require original works - as you see below.

And of course - I do from time to time do stuff just because I need a good image to go with a story...
